“So, what do you do?”
That is a question that we all have been asked many times over the years when meeting new people at social settings, kid’s events, plane rides, Uber rides, church, etc. If you are like me, I would always, without even thinking, answer this question by telling this person what I do in my working career. It would go kind of like this… “I do landscape work as I am a commercial landscape contractor” blah, blah
Granted this was probably the kind of answer that this guy was looking for, but a few years ago it hit me “why do I always start talking about my work life when someone asks me what I do?” What I realized was that I was placing way too much importance and too much of my identity in my career and work life.
Needless to say, I stopped giving that boring, lame, expected answer about my career when asked “so, what do you do?”
For years now, I have answered with something like “My wife and I often visit our grown kids in Denver and Washington DC and go hiking and fly fishing with them, we host and teach a home group Bible Study thru our church at our house each Tuesday night, I volunteer with 2 disaster relief organizations…” But then I always hit them with “and I’m in a Thursday morning Bible study that has met for the last 3 years and is part of FIND which is Fellowship in Discipleship”. This topic of FIND always leads to the most questions asked and a very meaningful conversation.
I’m able to share with them that the guys in my FIND group (called ReFIND) have truly become my best friends as we study the Bible, share the highs and lows in our lives, share stories about our families and careers, pray for one another and meet up outside of group for fellowship and other FIND events. So much spiritual TRANSFORMATION going on there by the Holy Spirit. The more I share the details about FIND with this new friend, the more they usually mention how much they are missing this type of community in their own lives, which really opens the door to inviting them to look into FIND.
I am thankful for my FIND small group & FIND community. We are truly all just regular guys that want to be better followers of Christ, better friends, dads, husbands and co workers.
